New EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x: performance and versatility for sports and nature professionals

May 14, 2013 by Piergiovanni Salimbeni

Canon enriches its range of long focal length zoom lenses with a new model of innovative features and high performance.

The EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x is a versatile zoom lens with an extended focal range of 200-400mm, a constant aperture of f/4, a 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer, and, for the first time in a conventional lens, a built-in 1.4x teleconverter. These features combine to offer sports and wildlife photographers an extraordinarily versatile and effective tool. A robust magnesium alloy design, weather sealing, and lens coatings make it ideal for active use, and these features, combined with excellent optical performance, enable exceptional results, even in the most challenging conditions.

Get closer to the action with superior image quality

The capabilities of the new EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x zoom are significantly expanded by its built-in 1.4x extender. This can be engaged or disengaged with the simple flick of a lever, extending the focal range from 280mm to 560mm, allowing you to get even closer to the action. The optical design includes both fluorite and Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) elements, a sophisticated and effective choice designed to minimise chromatic aberration. Meanwhile, advanced SubWavelength Structure Coating (SWC) and Super Spectra Coating reduce ghosting and flare. Thanks to the use of the latest optical technologies, performance is unaffected when using the built-in extender.

The constant f/4 aperture allows for high shutter speeds to capture fast-moving or poorly lit subjects. The newly developed optical image stabilizer offers a 4-stop advantage. Selecting “Mode 3” allows the stabilizer to intervene only at the moment of exposure, ensuring fast-action panning without overcompensating for motion. This feature is ideal for sports photographers, who often have only a fraction of a second to capture their subject.

Flexible and powerful focusing

The EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x features Canon’s highly precise ring-type ultrasonic motor, delivering fast and quiet autofocus. Those who prefer manual focus can rely on full-time manual focus control, allowing manual focus override at any time during AF. The new Power Focus feature, when used with an EOS 1DX or EOS 1DC, enables accurate one- or two-speed pull focus simply by rotating the focus recall ring to a preset distance, increasing versatility when shooting movies.

High-performance design for professional needs

Designed to offer the highly versatile focal range and image excellence that professionals demand, the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x boasts a premium design worthy of Canon’s L-series lenses.

The durable magnesium alloy frame keeps the weight comparable to that of a conventional zoom lens of the same power, despite the built-in 1.4x extender. Fluorine coatings on the front and rear lenses reduce dust and dirt adhesion, while the water- and dust-resistant construction allows for shooting in challenging weather conditions.
The combination of exceptional optical performance, versatility, weight, robust and protected construction makes it a desirable object for nature and sports shooting, for both the professional photographer and the demanding amateur.

The EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x will be available from late May 2013, with a suggested retail price of approximately €13,460, including VAT.

Main features:

  • Built-in 1.4x multiplier for extra magnification when needed
  • Low-light photography with up to 4-stop image stabilization
  • High image quality with fluorite lenses
  • Fast AF with USM technology
  • Rugged and protected design for use in the most demanding circumstances
