Official Canon Press Release - Compact Cameras for Digiscoping: Canon PowerShot G16 and PowerShot S120

August 22, 2013 by Piergiovanni Salimbeni

Exceptional speed and responsiveness
for the new Canon PowerShot G16 and PowerShot S120

(Photos and text: CANON)

Canon builds on its successful PowerShot series with the introduction of the PowerShot G16 and PowerShot S120, two new compact cameras that demonstrate Canon's unique expertise in image processing and optical design.

Built to deliver an exciting new level of image quality and performance in Canon's prosumer compact range, both models boast impressive speed and responsiveness. At their heart is Canon's new DIGIC 6 image processor, a powerful processing unit that delivers exceptional image quality. The raw power of DIGIC 6 allows you to expand your photographic experience and capture breathtaking images in a wide variety of challenging situations. Canon's HS System combines DIGIC 6 with a high-sensitivity 12.1 Megapixel 1/1.7-type CMOS sensor to deliver images with a wider dynamic range, low noise and high levels of detail even in low-light conditions, thanks to a sensitivity of up to ISO 12,800.

Offering increased speed and performance, both cameras feature fast, responsive shooting and operation, with continuous shooting burst rates of up to approximately 9 fps.1. Photographers can also benefit from a significant improvement in autofocus speed: the PowerShot G16 is now 41% faster than its predecessor, the PowerShot G15, while the PowerShot S120’s AF speed is 50% faster than its predecessor, the PowerShot S110. This is surprising as the PowerShot G15 and S110 were already significantly faster than their respective predecessors, the S and G models.

PowerShot G16

The PowerShot G16 features a super-bright Canon lens (f/1.8-2.8), developed using high-refractive glass and featuring a proprietary multiple anti-reflective coating designed to handle specific wavelengths of light at the nanometer scale. Its 5x optical zoom offers incredible versatility, with an f/1.8 aperture at the wide-angle 28mm focal length and an f/2.8 aperture at the longest focal length of 140mm. This gives photographers the freedom to shoot in low-light conditions, using fast shutter speeds to freeze motion even when using the optical zoom at its maximum focal length.

Featuring signature PowerShot G-series styling, the G16 offers a host of manual controls and excellent handling for everyday use; its lightweight, durable aluminum body makes it the ideal complement to an SLR camera. Designed for rapid one-handed operation, the camera features a two-level control dial, a dedicated video button, a customizable front dial, a rear dial, and a shortcut key, making it quick and easy to access and adjust camera settings between shots. The G16 is also the first PowerShot G-series model to feature wireless connectivity.

PowerShot G series cameras are often chosen by expert photographers. A recent survey conducted on the Canon Professional Network website2 revealed that G Series camera owners use the 83% for personal photography, and the 53% for professional purposes as well. This result highlights the trust professional photographers place in the G Series, using it as a companion camera in their daily work, but also to capture their private moments.

PowerShot S120

The PowerShot S120 is the world's thinnest camera and the first S-series model to feature an f/1.8 lens.3. The 24mm f/1.8 ultra-wide 5x optical zoom lens provides the flexibility to capture a wide variety of subjects. The lens delivers sharp images even in low-light conditions, thanks to its large aperture. The 24mm ultra-wide angle is ideal for capturing expansive panoramas, while the versatility of the 5x zoom makes it easier to get closer to subjects, and combined with the wide aperture range, allows you to shoot in all lighting conditions.

The S120 features a range of manual controls, demonstrating the perfect balance between size and outstanding image quality. Images can be shared directly to mobile devices and social networks via Wi-Fi, and key settings can be adjusted in a variety of ways, using dedicated control buttons, the 7.5cm (3.0”) touchscreen LCD monitor, or the signature S-series lens control ring. All of this puts the photographer in complete control.

Creative flexibility with manual control

Offering similar levels of control to Canon EOS DSLRs, both models are designed to allow full manual control of key exposure settings. The cameras also offer multi-aspect shooting and RAW format for maximum freedom in composition and post-production.

The development of two new Creative Filters—Star and Background Blur—as well as improved HDR capabilities will encourage creativity when shooting. Coupled with superb low-light ISO performance, Star mode, with three different presets—Star Nightscape, Star Trails, and Star Film Time-lapse—allows users to photograph a vibrant starry sky. The new Background Blur mode instantly creates the effect of a shallow depth of field by automatically blurring the background, while an improved HDR mode provides maximum freedom by allowing handheld shooting in HDR mode.

Image clarity with Intelligent IS

Canon's renowned optical image stabilization technology combats camera shake by suppressing blur in photos and shaky video. Intelligent IS automatically detects the shooting situation and applies the most appropriate image stabilization mode from seven presets. Both models also feature an advanced Dynamic IS mode that operates across five axes, reducing the camera shake that typically occurs when recording movies while walking or in a moving vehicle.

Always connected

Canon's Wi-Fi functionality available on both models allows images to be shared by wirelessly uploading directly to social media when connected to the internet, or via portable devices such as smartphones and tablets. The cameras also support mobile GPS tagging, allowing location data to be added to shots using Canon's dedicated smartphone or tablet app. The new Image Sync function conveniently safeguards precious images. Users can select and send images via Wi-Fi using Image Sync, which intelligently determines the best image backup method, either through online cloud storage4 either on a registered PC, and then automatically synchronize them.

Full HD videos

The PowerShot G16 and PowerShot S120 support Full HD (1920 x 1080) 60p video recording with stereo sound, ideal for capturing creative, high-quality videos. With both cameras, the optical zoom can be used while filming, while Continuous AF ensures subjects are always in focus. The PowerShot G16 features Fine Detail Movie processing and advanced noise reduction at 60p, for shooting movies even in difficult lighting conditions. Users can also focus manually before shooting with Manual Focus Peaking, which highlights high-contrast areas and facilitates precision focusing. For greater compatibility with smartphones and tablets, the PowerShot S120 and PowerShot G16 record in MP4 format, and movies can be easily transcoded. in-room, compressing the movie size (up to 88% less) for quick and easy sharing.

The PowerShot G16 and PowerShot S120 will be on sale from the end of September 2013 at a suggested retail price of 604 euros for the PowerShot G16 and 494 euros for the PowerShot S120 respectively.

The PowerShot G16 can shoot continuously at 12.2 fps for the first 5 frames and then 9.3 fps for approximately 522 frames. The PowerShot S120 can shoot continuously at 12.1 fps for the first 5 frames and then 9.4 fps for approximately 635 images. For both models, the total number of frames captured varies depending on the subject being shot. A compatible SDHC/SDXC UHS Speed Class 1 memory card is required.
